What is a hostname/host?

A hostname is a label or name a computer uses for identification on the Internet and to communicate with other devices on the network. A hostname is a part of the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).

A host, or a network host, is any device that can communicate with other devices/hosts connected to the network. Hosts can be clients and servers.
